Today we can wear any piece of jewellery when we want and where we want … although wearing a tiara in the supermarket might seem a bit odd – but why not!! But this has not always been the case and this talk delves into the world of historical jewellery rules. Was it better to pile the jewellery on, wear certain jewels at certain times of the day or for a particular reason? Or was it right to discard the ‘rules’ and just have fun and be recognised as a trend setter not a follower? So many questions … so many answers … join us for a fun packed talk.

To celebrate Afternoon Tea Week, we welcome back Steven Moore to the gallery to present this new lecture. Afternoon Tea is a familiar treat, but its history is more complex and full of misinformation. Steven will expose the fascinating truth about afternoon tea’s real history including the important role Harrogate played in its history.

Gems of the World Part 1 – Sri Lanka
This new series of talks will delve into the fascinating world of gemstones and consider why certain gemstones grow in certain areas of the world and what makes the origin of the gemstone so important and potentially adding value to the stones. We will also consider the history of mining in each country, the popularity of the gemstones from each country and why they were, or are, so prized in jewels today.
Sri Lanka offers a rich and diverse range of gemstones. This talk will look at the history of the coloured stones that have formed an essential part of Sri Lanka’s impressive gemstone industry. Which gemstones from Sri Lanka are the most important and why? We will consider these questions in a part handling session.

Myths and Magic – Jewels with a Story to Tell
Why do people say opals and emeralds bring bad luck? Did certain historic jewels bring families bad luck? Intrigued …. ? This is the talk for you. We will be delving into mystery, suspense and shocking revelations associated with jewels and gemstones.
